Kurdistan RAAB (Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness)
The need to collect epidemiological data on avoidable eye diseases has led to the nation-wide project of "RAAB" (Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness). Farabi comprehensive center of excellence in ophthalmology is in charge of the project in the province of Kurdistan. RAAB, in which around 3500 adults older than 50 years old are selected in a random clustering process and examined by optometrists and health experts, covers all rural and urban areas in the province. People with ophthalmic diseases were referred to ophthalmologists. Moreover, surgeries have been performed free of charge for patients having cataract.
The project is being implemented with the cooperation of Chams Research Chair (Farabi Comprehensive Center of Excellence in Ophthalmology), Farabi Eye Research Center, and Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences by the financial support of Deputy of Health, Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education
